Genesis
of the Professional Certificate Program
Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) are a technology recognized today for
its unlimited application to a range of complex
issues. Increasingly, human and natural processes and
events are modeled and analyzed in a computer environment. This
trend has led to an ever increasing
demand for highly-skilled professionals and, by extension,
high-quality GIS training.
A handful of programs that teach GIS and its related technologies
have sprung up at various colleges and universities across
the country. However, these programs are in a variety
of different forms and few offer a coordinated approach
so essential to the successful learning of the technology.
For the past five years, a Professional Certificate in
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has been running
at George Mason University in the Washington D.C. area.
This program has done much to advance GIS training in
the region by recognizing the value of academic training,
while focusing on the practical aspects of GIS and related
technologies in order to provide professionals the knowledge
and skills necessary to effectively meet the challenges
of the 21st century workplace. The next step is to take
the model developed for this program and establish it
in prominent cities across the United States. The
program defined here provides the first nationwide GIS learning experience
that addresses the professional training needs of the
growing Geospatial workforce.
This website outlines a program of study designed
by Global View, Inc. to satisfy this immediate demand.
This program can be fully functional at any institution
in a matter of months from its adoption.
Global View, Inc.
